Similar to personal care products, cookware is one of the most cleanwashed categories out there!

Similar to BPA-free claims, you’ll see “PFOA-free” claims ALL over the Marketing for cookware. Unfortunately companies DO NOT have to disclose what comprises their coatings and many have just resorted to using lesser known relatives of PFOA that are yep, you guessed it, just as harmful. So, a good rule of thumb is to avoid coated or non-stick cookware and be wary of “safe, PFOA-free” claims.

What about Ceramic-coated pans like Green pan?

This is one of the most-popular alternatives to traditional “non-stick” teflon coatings and I do own some ceramic pans.  Some ceramic coated pans like Green Pan have shared enough information about their thermolon technology to show that they are a better option than teflon (can withstand higher temps without emitting toxic fumes, etc) BUT, I’ve learned that not all ceramic coatings are created equal and if companies are not transparent about what comprises that ceramic coating, how are we supposed to know if they are truly safe?

The bottom line is this: anything with a coating has some level of risk so balance your need for a non-stick pan with this information.

If it’s not something you use daily, and you try to alternate with stainless steel, cast iron, or 100% ceramic, I think using a ceramic coated pan is fine.  Main drawback is durability. Most ceramic pans last about 3-5 years and that’s if you take excellent care of the coating (no metal spatulas, harsh abrasives, lower temps, no olive oil, etc).

Once the coating is compromised, the leaching risk increases and safety decreases so keep that in mind too.

There are 100% ceramic, non-coated pans like Xtrema that I do recommend as these are not coated and are less of a leach risk because the material is more solid than quasi-ceramic (coated) pans.

Natural ceramic (not ceramic coated) is a great option for cooking, although similar to cast iron, it requires special handling to make sure it lasts.

Organic Healthy Sleep

Lower Tox Living is proud to be a promotional partner with Naturepedic.

Naturepedic has been leading the organic mattress business for over 15 years and is committed to producing the safest, healthiest mattresses possible. Unlike many companies, they back up this commitment with the most meaningful independent certifications in the industry.

When shopping for a Queen or King-sized bed, each side can be customized – if you like firm, but your partner prefers soft, Naturepedic can make that happen – all without any harmful toxins! They also consider potential allergens and offer latex-free mattresses for adults (the Chorus line), and latex-free crib mattresses for young children.

Avocado Mattresses are one of the more affordable organic mattress companies on the market.  They offer a wide range of GOTS & GOLS , and MADESAFE Organic mattresses, bedding, pillows, and mattress toppers with some of the lowest prices in the industry.

Happsy is a Naturepedic company, and is made with the exact same materials, with the exact same certifications, but at a price-point that’s more accessible to many! Happsy understands the dangers that come with questionable chemicals and flame retardants. That’s why they offer a natural, non-toxic mattress that goes well beyond the strictest organic mattress standards.

Also a Naturepedic company, Lullaby Earth mattresses for baby and kids are EWG VERIFIED® and consciously crafted with healthier, gentler materials. They are easy to clean and designed with safety in mind. With Lullaby Earth, your little one (and you!) can rest easily.

My Green Mattress offers a wide selection of mattresses at an affordable price.  Their adult, child, and baby mattresses are all GOTS, GOLS and GREENGUARD Gold certified. They offer fully latex (no springs), a latex-free mattress (the Pure Echo), and options with both latex and springs, for a more traditional mattress feel.

Holy Lamb creates beautiful, sustainably handcrafted products using all natural and organic materials to create a healthy, eco-friendly life and home. They have lovely mattresses, pillows, sheets and more!
